Elephant Rock 34-mile ride

On June 6th, we went to Castle Rock for the Elephant Rock Ride. There are a number of ride routes from 7 miles to 100 miles (a century). Last year we did the 25 mile mountain bike ride. This year Karen wanted to try the 34 mile road ride. She just bought a new road bike to commute to work on. This was the longest ride she’d done to date. She did very well. I think the new bike really helped. Well, that and being on her bike a lot more than last year.

We went to the 4th of July Parade here in Monument, CO. This time we were smart and bicycled over, it’s only 3 miles. Last time we took the shuttle bus from the high school next to us. Coming back on the bus took longer than if we had walked home. We forgot that it was an election year. Well, that is until the parade started. At least half of the parade entries were political. Note to self: Don’t go the parade again in an election year.

We still had a good time, even with all the political stuff. Watching the audience was as fun as watching the parade.

Colorado College Criterium Bike Race

Way back on April 19th Colorado College hosted a criterium bike race for college and pro bicyclists. The racers raced for a set time period over a 1-mile long course. Out of curiosity, Jeff timed a couple of the laps and the racers average speed was about 25 mph. The mile long course only had one small downhill and a small uphill. In other words, it was basically a flat course.

It was an interesting day watching the various racer classes and doing some people watching as well. There was a guy there that strung a strap between a couple of trees. He was doing some balancing and acrobatics on the strap. Late in the day there was a costume race. This is where all the racers dressed up in some sort of costume. One group of racers was a family riding a bicycles built for five.
