2004-2005 Holidays in Moab

By Jeff Shapiro

This was a five day adventure in and around Moab, UT with Bill Burke, owner of Four Wheeling America (www.bb4wa.com). Bill plays tour guide and some time instructor during his annual Holidays in Moab trip. This was five days of driving various trails in the Moab area.

Bill is a great guide and very helpful. I'm surprised that his head doesn't explode because of all the tidbits of information that he knows about the area and four-wheeling. This trip was well worth the time and money. If possible, I'll be back for more next year!

  Date Description
Day 1 2004.12.28
Day 1

38 pictures

This was an "easy" warm up day to get to know each other and to get a feeling for the trails.

Trails driven: Monitor and the Merrimac, Seven Mile Rim, parts of 3-D, and visited: Mill Canyon Dinosaur Trail and Stagecoach Way Station.
Day 2 2004.12.29
Day 2

28 pictures

This was a day of playing in the mud, snow and ice. It rained or snowed most the day and we crossed the Dolores River twice.

Trails driven: Kokopelli Trail from the Dewey Bridge, crossed Dolores River, over to Top of the World, ran parts of Seven Mile Mesa and Waring Mesa on the Rose Garden Hill route. Finished with Onion Creek.
Day 3 2004.12.30
Day 3

37 pictures

This was probably the most difficult day for the trails that we did. You have to figure that any trail called "Metal Masher" isn't going to be that easy.

Trails driven: Two-Tortoise Loop off of Little and Bull Canyons, Metal Masher with Mirror Alley, Devil's Punch Bowl, Gemini Bridges.
Day 4 2004.12.31 Day 4

25 pictures

This was a moderately difficult day as far as trails go. The weather decide to be nice to us and provided us with some great views.

Trails driven: Tiptoe Behind the Rocks, Sand Dunes, and to celebrate New Year's we did a night run in Strike Ravine with a muddy hill called Big Ugly (this hill lived up to its name).
Day 5 2005.01.01
Day 5

30 pictures

This was an easy day north east of Moab. We got to see some dinosaur foot prints and visited Arches Nation Park with all its great arches.

Trails driven: Klondike Bluffs, Tower Arch Road, Arches National Park
